Inspired by major brands like Chick-fil-A and Sierra Nevada’s websites, they envisioned an immersive, storytelling-driven platform to captivate visitors and showcase their craftsmanship. FUEL enabled them to dream big, exploring how design, movement, and interactivity could come together to bring their brand story to life in a dynamic and engaging way.
The initial challenge was to create a website that honors the company’s country roots—remembering its founder’s humble beginnings building fences and pole barns—while showcasing its evolution into a premier construction partner on high-profile projects like municipal buildings, college campus buildings, and luxury development clubhouses. The task was to strike a delicate balance between preserving an authentic, down-to-earth narrative and projecting the sophistication and innovation that now defines the company.
J Davis faced a fierce regional competitive landscape with overlapping market segments such as Education, Industrial, and Community & Municipality. The challenge was to set them apart online by designing a dynamic, less traditional layout that could filter portfolios by sector, showcase multiple office locations, and incorporate compelling social proof through testimonials, awards, and stats. Additionally, we needed to craft a more engaging primary CTA to drive user interaction and elevate the overall user experience.
Apart from some best-in-class construction brands and websites, J Davis garnered inspiration from larger brands like Sierra Nevada for their storytelling and even Chick-fil-A in their consumer-centric experience. In order to determine the best way to represent the brand online, we sought to personify the brand as a rugged but refined outdoorsman. These elements came together in a creative brief that would guide us along our journey.
J Davis needed a new construction website that balanced bold sophistication with a clean, contemporary feel while showcasing their craftsmanship and design sensibilities. The challenge was to create a visually striking yet highly functional digital experience—one that incorporated dynamic movement, subtle micro-animations, and modern typography while maintaining intuitive navigation. The site needed to provide a seamless user experience, effectively communicate the J Davis brand story, and serve as a scalable platform for future growth. Additionally, with no existing brand guidelines, the project required a strategic approach to defining visual and verbal identity elements, ensuring consistency across design, messaging, and user engagement.
To adhere to the bold brief and overcome the challenge of creating a website that conveys “quiet confidence” while making a memorable first impression. We leveraged a load screen to introduce brand personality and story early, designed a compelling homepage, and used motion strategically to delight without distraction. Conventional navigation was maintained with an innovative twist, and a reimagined careers page showcased the company’s culture. Emphasizing high image quality with new professional lifestyle and headshot photography, and using red intentionally as a bold brand accent, ensured a unique, authentic digital experience.
To achieve the desired motion and effects for each page and section, our developers selected a platform called NUXT to build the site’s front-end. It was important to achieve the seamless movement and subtle microanimations we had planned in the design phase. The goal was to have each page feel immersive while still maintaining control for the user.
